A few weeks ago, I got a fat package from the lovely people at OXO. (And when I say lovely, I mean killer, fantastic, and all around sensational.) I don’t remember the day or time, what I was wearing…had I even showered yet? Don’t know. Don’t care. I just remember the box had an OXO sticker on it, which immediately triggered a squeal so loud that dogs could hear me from the next county over.

The box included a large amount of products to try out and review. Somebody pinch me.

There, right at the top, was this tool – a Corn Peeler. Since corn is at it’s peak right now, and our weekly trip to the Farmer’s Market includes a batch, I got right to it.

If you’re grilling corn to simply eat it right off the cob (dental floss stand by), clearly there’s no use for this. But, if you’re grilling corn because you want those pretty kernels in a bowl, or need them for a recipe, then this handy dandy tool is, well, handy. And dandy.

It felt sturdy, comfortable in my hand with it’s non-slip grip, and cut the kernels with ease. Also, they designed it so that the blade is positioned at the perfect angle, making sure you can’t cut to shallow or too deep. I like that it’s dishwasher safe, and an added bonus is the clear plastic cover that protects the blade.

Sure, you can just use a knife…and run the risk of cutting yourself. And having uneven kernels. Where’s the fun in that?

To get you in the mood, try this grilled corn with Feta and Lime. Oh me, oh my.

Grilled Corn with Feta and Lime
Serves 4
Prep time: 25 minutes
Cook time: 20-25 minutes

Ingredients
• 4 ears of corn, in husks
• 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
• Juice from one lime
• 1?4 teaspoon chili powder (or to taste)
• 2 ounces feta cheese
• kosher salt to taste

Directions
Heat the grill to high (about 500 degrees.) Soak corn in cool water for 10 minute, turning occasionally.
In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, lime juice, and chili powder; set aside.

Peel back the husks of the corn without removing them completely. Remove as much of the silks as you can. Brush the mayo mixture onto the corn and return husks to as close to their original place as possible. Wrap each husk in heavy duty aluminum foil.

Place on grill, cover and cook, turning often for about 20 minutes. Remove to a serving plate and sprinkle the feta cheese over each cob. Season with coarse salt and serve with lime wedges on the side.

What an awesome tool…will make it much easier to include fresh, sweet corn in dishes…always a great variation to just eatin’ it right of the cob!

I have been looking for the OXO corn peeler to no success, and it looks like a great tool! If I had it I would love to try the grilled corn with lime and feta, and also have fresh kernal corn peeled from the cob!

This great. This tool will make cutting corn so much easier and safer. I always hate trying to saw off kernels while balancing a corn of cob on a plate. It’d get so frustrating that I’d just open a can. Now that there’s this tool, I’ll have reason to donate my canned corn to charity. Gotta get me one of these! ^.^

Being a longtime Cornhusker from the state of Nebraska, I love the opportunity to grill fresh, local sweetcorn whenever I can. OXO products are awesome. This tool would be a wonderful addition to my other collection of OXO items.

OXO is awesome! I have a wonderful recipe that I’ve been making almost weekly (thank you garden fresh tomatoes & herbs!) for a corn and tomato salad with avocado etc. It’s wonderful but after grilling the corn you have to cut it off the cob, which I might add is a royal pain. I’ve sliced myself a couple of times when the cob slipped. I’ve seen the corn peelers that you push the whole ear of corn through but it misses a lot of the corn and/or cuts too deep. This looks like a keeper!

Love this! Having a 5 year old who doesn’t like burnt fingers from holding hot corn on the cob and 2 soon to be wearing braces teens, this is absolutely awesome! Would love to get my hands on this gem!

I just LOVE all the recipes! I could REALLY use one of these corn peelers too. My mom taught me the ‘knife’ way to cut corn off the cob, but I just about don’t have any knuckles left.

Ha! You’re going to think I came over here just so that I could win one of those corn peelers. But, you’d be WRONG! I really came over just to gawk at that gorgeous corn.

WI Corn has been SO GOOD this year… guess that’s one benefit of this torturous heat we’ve been getting. And I have trouble eating corn off of the cob (thanks to some delightful bridgework in my face)… so maybe that corn peeler would be kewl too.

I JUST made corn/feta/onion/cherry tomato/lime salad last night. I bought a bunch of sweet corn at the farmers market, and of course had to cut it off the cob with my big knife. Corn was flying everywhere. This would have made it so much easier!

Andrea – I must admit, I like it both way…shaved and directly off the cob (there’s something about that sound as you bite down and hear the kernels burst.) Great note about the Cooks Illustrated pick – I feel even more validated. It is hard to go wrong with OXO, though. They make such great products. I’m going broke because of them ;-)

The corn looks amazing, and I, too, like Dad, can make a meal out of just corn. I love the grain and can’t help myself when it’s in front of me. In fact, I had it for a snack when I got home yesterday. I would LOVE a corn peeler (a gadget I do not own), so throw my name in as well. And, Ame, this is a fabulous picture!

I have to echo Ms. Jenny…since Jordan is hoping for her two front teeth for Christmas, corn must be off the cobb to be eaten right now. Corn is one of the few veggies my kids will eat anyway, so having a corn peeler would be awesome!

The feta/lime recipe sounds really good; I’m off to the co-op for some fresh-picked, super-cold cobs. Incidentally, just two or three weeks ago, the weekly e-mail from Cook’s Illustrated/America’s Text Kitchen/Cook’s Country reviewed corn peelers and this one won! Everybody in my family, being related to an actual Swedish bachelor farmer who grows his own sweet corn, just eats it off the cob. I, the recipe collector, want to cut the kernels off! So yeah, SIGN ME UP, please! I have some really great OXO tools. I love them.

I’ve been eating corn around the U.S. this summer: Ohio, Maine, New Hampshire, and of course our dear Minnesota. It all varies; you’ve got perfect cobs sometimes, and lesser ones another, but the state don’t matter.

The question of how to peel off corn when you cook extra and then realize you can’t eat all that came up–and voila, here you are with a corn peeler.

Did anyone else here have braces and have to give up corn on the cob for 2 years? I remember thinking that was a terrible hardship when I was 13. So was no one being willing to take me shopping for back to school clothes. Life was so cruel!

I think you should go into advertising. If I were OXO, I would look at that picture up there and hire you instantly.

You KNOW that I like to slice away the kernels – and take my chances at such a dangerous undertaking – rather than floss for an hour afterward. Put my name in the drawing. I am not related to you or the sponsors for today. Well, you for today. The sponsors, not at all, but I did give their squeegee a great writeup on Amazon!

I could make a meal out of Grilled Corn with Feta and Lime. I could even make a meal without the lime. Three ears is all it would take, four if there’s a gas station on the way home. And you’re close to the farmer’s market where they sell the really good stuff, i.e., they don’t sell corn to the government to louse up our gas mileage and subsidize… Oh, right, no politics allowed.

To summarize: I love corn and feta. I want a corn peeler. If I don’t win, I want one for Jay’s birthday which is before Thanksgiving or, if necessary, Paul’s. Your photographs are becoming top-notch. Did I mention I want a corn peeler, and I don’t know who you are? And, I will not talk politics which would be uncouth whatever the hell that means.

P.S. Ethan sounds very knowledgeable, extremely honest, and of high character. All people with that name usually are. Some even make fair to midland furniture.
