Grilled Goat Cheese and Nutella Sandwich

I never make New Year’s resolutions, but when 2011 kicked off, I did have a few food issues I wanted to work on. Not Oprah-type food issues. More like, sitting down while I eat, chewing my food thoroughly, and mostly, no more snacking after 8pm.

I think I made it to the second week before I completely dropped the ball on that last one…which I fully blame on Nutella and a spoon – the combo has a powerful force that cannot be ignored.

But I am perplexed as to Nutella’s sudden popularity. I mean, hasn’t it been around since the 60’s? And yet, it’s everywhere right now, dominating the airwaves and the blogosphere. My guess – everyone finally got tired of all the macaroon recipes and needed something else to obsess about.

We always have it in the house. With Haley’s allergy, a container of Nutella and a container of Sunflower Butter makes us not miss peanut butter as much. (Okay, that’s me talking. Paul still cries at night.)

Now, goat cheese…goat cheese is another story. I’m the only one in my house that likes it. But I don’t need to find a substitute for this neat little grilled cheese sandwich. Because I can make just one. :D

*raises eyebrow* Nutella and goat cheese? Tough sell, huh? It sounded like a strange pairing to me too, I know. But it works. Truly. It won’t convert a goat cheese nay-sayer. But if you’re like me and already enjoy it, you’ll love this sandwich.

You better go make one now, while it still seems hip and cool…before the Nutella rage is all just a distant memory.

Grilled Goat Cheese with Nutella Sandwich
Serves 4
Prep time: 15 minutes
Total time: 20 minutes

Ingredients
• 1/2 cup Nutella
• 4 ounces goat cheese, at room temperature
• 8 slices country white bread (1/4 inch thick)
• 2 tablespoons butter, at room temperature

Directions
In a small bowl, stir the Nutella and cheese together.

Butter one side of each slice of bread. Place 4 slices on your work surface, buttered side down. Spread the cheese mixture evenly over the 4 slices and place the remaining 4 bread slices on top, buttered side up.

Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Put the sandwiches in the skillet, cover and cook for 2 minutes or until the undersides are golden brown and the cheese has softened.

Uncover and turn the sandwiches with the spatula. Cook for 2 more minutes or until the undersides are golden brown. Serve immediately.

Note: unlike most grilled cheese, you do not want to press down to flatten or the filling will ooze out.

Hrm. Goat cheese and nutella, huh?
I’ll probably be abolished for saying I’m not a huge fan of Nutella. It’s… alright, but not anything I’d crave most days. And yet… pair it with something salty, and you might have something.

Love it, Amy.

You’d only be abolished if you said that over at Bella Nutella. But not hear, friend. I still love you. And honestly, I think you should try this…the oddity of it might be right up your alley.

You have thoroughly intrigued me. I happen to have both and I will have to try this strange combo of two of my favorite things!

MAN – the sandwich could not look more amazing. Nutella is to blame for all the evils in the world. hehe

This sounds great. I love new flavor combos. I am with you on the sudden Nutella craze. People keep asking me if I have heard of it. Um…yes…I have been shoveling it down by the spoonful for many a year now.

I’m a Nutella lover from waaay back, I grew up on the stuff. I remember many a stomachache that resulted from a jar of Nutella and a spoon! I still can’t be trusted around it, but that doesn’t seem to stop me from buying it (you’d think I would have learned my lesson being a “grown-up” now and everything.) I have to admit I’m raising my eyebrow here a little, goat cheese and Nutella? But I’ve gonna trust you and try it.

I got my first jar of Nutella in about 1976, when my sister brought some back from France. I recently mixed some — no idea how much, sorry! — into a bowl of brownies, and they were luscious.

Oh yes. I have made many batches of Nutella laced brownies. Nom nom. Here’s a website devoted to everything Nutella. Get ready to drool! http://bellanutella.com/

Two of my favorite things married in between bread. Match made in heaven, if you ask me.

I just stumbled across your blog and you had me hooked at “Nutella” and “goat cheese.”

I consider it to be quite fortunate that I have some goat cheese in my fridge. Now I just need to purchase a jar of Nutella. Truly, i don’t know what to do with you Amy. Just when I thought I had kicked my habit…

A post after my heart! Goat cheese! I’m gonna have to try it! I’ve been thinking about Nutella and thinly sliced apples grilled. Might be good huh?

Nutella really has been around since the 60′s. When I was little my Nonna would bring me Nutella from Italy. A few years later a little Italian store in Providence started to sell it and we would travel once a month or so to get some. I remember all my friends back in the 70′s were totally perplexed when they saw it and then they tasted it and they knew. So Nutella brings back some of my earliest food memories.

Nutella…from your Nonna…from Italy. Now, that’s the real deal. Love that story. Love that you shared it with me.

This combination sounds so bizarre that I will have to try it. I’ve put goat cheese on the shopping list for next week. You have me intrigued.

I dunno Amy…it sounds a little odd. But I can kinda imagine it. I mean goat cheese tastes great with sweet beets, why not sweet hazelnut chocolate cream? Hmmmmm. I’ll get back to you.

Beautiful picture, btw. Your toasted bread is perfect!

Thanks Anne! I know…I said it was going to be a tough sell :( But it really was so good. More importantly, now you have me day dreaming about goat cheese and beets. Mmmm.

Nutella is suddently taking over the world…it’s weird. I’ve had it for as long as I can remember, but suddenly everyone is now on the Nutella bandwagon. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Goat cheese and Nutella does seem like an odd combination — but I love them both. And bread. And grilled cheese. Long story short — I’m in. Come join me for one? :)

A cow is the one that should give milk,
Shaken, stirred and flavored disguises.
Adding Nutella or stuff of that ilk
Is something that my pallet really despises.

Got a Kit-Kat bar?

Have to admit… I’m super skeptical (and I’m a goat cheese FANATIC!) Guess I’ll have to try it next time I’ve got some GC in the fridge!

Amy February 17, 2011 at 3:12 pm

I was skeptical too. But somehow it works, especially if you already like goat cheese.
