A few months back I did a guest interview over at Skinny Mom. Now Brooke Griffin, owner of Skinny Mom, is returning the favor. And what better timing with the holidays and bounty of sugar heading our way, I figure she could help motivate us on how to keep the extra pounds at bay. Welcome Brooke!
Tell me a little bit about Skinny Mom?
Skinny Mom is where moms get the “skinny” on fitness, food, fashion, and family.
Skinny Mom is a community of real moms who share a common goal to set a positive example for their families by leading active, healthy, and happy lives. Through the Skinny Mom platform, these moms connect, share, and inspire with other like-minded mothers.
What’s your favorite thing about being a mom?
Where do I start…There is so much that I love about being a mom. It truly is the most amazing gift a woman could ever have. My son just turned two so the past couple of years have been filled with memorable milestones like taking his first step and saying “mama.” My heart still melts when he says it. I also love the little things like seeing him get so excited over balloons. Nothing makes him happier than getting to shoot basketball.
Truly, there really isn’t anything that I haven’t’ come to love about being a mother. I quickly realized that time goes by so quickly and I try to remember that every moment I spend with him is another moment that God has blessed me with. Honestly, I even love watching the same episode of Bubble Guppies over and over every morning because I know how happy it makes him.
What’s your least favorite thing about being a mom?
My little man just turned two so he is at the age where he is staring to test me and he has proved he has quite the temper. He does not like to share (what kid does at that age?). If you have ever tried to reason with a 2-year-old on why they need only one color crayon when there are 23 other crayons in the box, you know exactly what I am talking about.
What’s your favorite exercise?
Hands down, my favorite exercise is burpees even though I don’t really like that word – ha!) I get asked all of the time what a “burpee” is and my response is that it is one of the best exercises that you can do for total body conditioning. In addition, you can also do a burpee at home without any equipment, which is great for us moms.
Wondering how to do a burpee? Start in a squat position with hands on the floor in front of you, kick your feet back to a push-up position, return to the squat position and then jump up as high as you can. Repeat for as many reps as you can.
Burpees are great because it uses your own body weight as resistance and gives you an effective workout in very little time. If I have a stressful day and find that I don’t have time for a full workout or jog outside than I will turn on my favorite show and do burpees during the commercial breaks… believe me, it works!
How do you stay motivated?
Staying motivated is all about your attitude. I believe that your attitude will ultimately determine if you are successful at anything – whether it is being a good mom, losing weight, or achieving career success. To stay motivated and keep a positive attitude I start everyday with the same routine. I wake up, take a few minutes to pray, and then I write down something that I am grateful for. Now, believe me some days this is harder than others. I also make it a point to speak positive things about whatever is going on in my life. I speak positive things in the car, before I go to bed, to my friends, and to myself all day. I think people don’t realize the power that their words have on their attitudes. If an individual realizes the power in these words, I am certain it could lead to a more positive attitude.
What’s your favorite post workout snack?
I love a scoop of chocolate protein powder mixed with water and a banana. Sometimes I will replace the banana with two rice cakes topped with all natural strawberry jam.
What do you indulge in?
My favorite cheat meal is from a local pizza place called Dewey’s Pizza. They have a pizza called the Ryan’s Inferno and it is my favorite! I love their pizza and when I go I make sure to get my fill in.
What do you crave?
What don’t I crave these days? Being a mom has brought back cravings that I hadn’t had since I was a child. I never thought that I would crave fruit snacks or animal crackers again in my adult life – but I do! I also have a serious craving for potato chips. My cravings for junk food are one of the main reasons that I don’t keep the junk food in the pantry. If junk food is there, I am going to be tempted to eat it.
If given the choice, would you pick cake or pie? (I ask everybody this one!)
Hands down, cake!! Everyone in my family knows that if it’s their birthday or there is another event that needs celebrating I am going to make a cake. They know that I will make cake not only because I want to celebrate but because I want an excuse to eat cake too! My favorite is my Skinny Pina Colada Cake…it is delicious!
