Summer of Smoothies (week 8): WaterLemon Slushie – virgin or spiked!

About 10 years ago, we were at my friend Nicole’s house. Her son, who was about four years old at the time (I think?), had a horrible stomach ache. Like could barely move type stomach ache. Flu? Getting kicked with a soccer ball? Growing pains? No. This was caused by eating too much watermelon. He loved it so much that he would eat until he was in pain. (He recovered, of course. Only to repeat this process days later, I’m sure. I think Nicole learned when to cut him off.)

To this day, I can never talk about watermelon, be around watermelon, or eat watermelon without thinking about that day. Isn’t it crazy the things that stay with us?!

Anyway, I actually find watermelon to be sort of tasteless and boring. Unless it’s in a salad or paired with feta and balsamic. OR in a slushie with lemon sorbet! This little number is so refreshing on a hot summer day, which we have plenty of in California.

The kids and I enjoyed a non-alcoholic version, while Paul added some booze in his. Straws for everyone…because straws are fun!

WaterLemon Slushie (virgin or spiked!)
Serve 2
Prep time: 5 minutes

• 2 cups diced watermelon
• 1 cup lemon sorbet
• 1 cup ice
• 2-3 shots vodka (simply omit this for a kid-friendly version)

Place all ingredients in the blender and process until smooth. Pour into individual tumblers and enjoy!

I know I’m REALLY dehydrated when I start craving watermelon. Like you said, I don’t love it as is…but when paired with various tart/tangy/salty flavors, it’s love at first bite. Or sip, as the case may be!

I totally loved watermelon as a kid but I agree – very boring as an adult. And virgin or spiked??? You’re crazy… must be spiked ;)

You are so right, our drinks should get married! Ha. My son has the same problem with watermelon or cantaloupe. He just can’t stop.

Love this especially with a little vodka!
