Chunky Clam Chowder

Okay, I give. It’s Fall. I get it. Actually, at this point I would be happy to even have a Fall season. But Minnesota likes to short change us on Summer, bypass Fall, and jump right on into Winter.
While Haley was excited for the first snowfall—barely into the second week of October (!), and Trevor was mesmerized by the white dust on our lawn, I shrugged my shoulders and decided to embrace the day by making clam chowder. (If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, right?)
I love soup, but I’m more of a stew and chowder gal. And I like my chowder with stuff in it! None of this loose, dig-to-the-bottom-of-the-bowl-to-find-the-treasure type chowder. I want it thick. Unfortunately, I find most clam chowder recipes to be thin and bland, so over the years I perfected my own.
If you don’t eat meat, you could eliminate the pork, but I really believe it’s a key player, adding another layer of texture and a salty flavor.
Simple. Chunky. Comforting. And perfect for a cold, windy day. Or one with snow on the ground.

Beautiful chowder, I love it chunky and the addition of salty pork sounds fantastic!
We love thick soups and stews too. And we share the same all too brief spring and fall. Sigh.
Looks delish!
Wish I would have had this for dinner! Perfect for a cold winter…I mean fall…night. Yes, it’s gotta be thick. Otherwise, what’s the point.
Florida, likes to bypass Fall,Winter and teases you with Spring and then it’s summer again :-)
The chowder looks fabulous! A bowl of chowder is a great way to warm up on a cold day.
Thanks for sharing!
I haven’t had clam chowder in so long. God, this sounds good. Now I’ll be craving it until I can get all the ingredients!
Yum! Love clam chowder just like you make it! And I’ve heard about those Minnesota winters….
I am so with you on the soup front. If it’s not thick and hearty then it’s not worth my time. Anything less just doesn’t seem like a substantial enough dinner.
I love your version of chowder. It looks so comforting to me right now. We had temperatures in the forties yesterday! Not as bad as Minnesota, I fear, but pretty bad for NYC at this time of year. Why can’t it just be summer year-round? Or even spring. Spring weather with fall food. I need to find some way to arrange that.
Yeah, this weather is an insult to what’s supposed to be the best time of the year in Minnesota. But your chowder does look like a good remedy for the too-early winter blues.
I cannot believe you guys got snow! In SC, we’re lucky to get one snowfall a year. If we do, the whole city comes to a halt. No one knows how to drive.
We made our first fire last night and we had soup! I love it. I’m not a huge fan of the cold, but I love a roaring fire and a bowl of soup to fend it off. This chowder is so… homemade. Honestly, I usually start with a canned version and add on to it. And now I am ashamed of myself. Perhaps I’ll get more adventurous this year. I am sure whole clams and pork will make a huge difference.
Can I come over for dinner at your house? I think I will be making this over the weekend. Right now, however, I wish I was at home, curled up on the couch with a bowl of this. We have pouring rain and winds of about 30 MPH (no joke), so it’s the perfect day for chowder.
If you don’t eat “meat,” you could always make chowder with potatoes, or just heat up some cream and drink it straight. Clams ain’t meat anyway. They’re bottom feeders like sedentary lobsters or scallops. It took brave trailblazers to be the first to eat them.
You who think your bodies are temples owe it to those pioneers and yourself to take maybe 10 minutes off your life span and have one of life’s great pleasures, clam chowder. Your temples could use some interior decorating, anyway.
While Amy suffers with early snow in Minneannoplace, we in San Fran are having torrential rains – an inch at least – and another perfect reason to have clam chowder. So snow on the ground or just huge puddles, this is the perfect time for clam chowder in front of a fireplace surrounded by people who agree with your opinions and are, therefore, “agreeable.”
Enjoy these days, Amy. The wonder in the kids eyes, the pleasure of getting wet and cold, and having Mommy to make you clam chowder… One day, the white stuff that will amaze Trevor will be the feathers left over from a pillow fight with Haley.
What a perfect day for soup. I’ll have to brave the downpour to get all the ingredients, but it looks worth it. Who doesn’t love clam chowder!
Looks really good! Love your blue bowls.
It’s been raining and been very, very wet and chilly today. I have no complaints. Please send a huge tub of that delicious stuff over! :-D
Awesome!!!! I LOOOOVVVVEEEE clam chowder. Yeah for me because Jennifer says above that she’s going to make it this weekend. I am such a lucky guy to have a SIL and wife that love to cook. I’m sure Paul would agree.
That’s precisely the sort of chowder that gets my blood pumping. All full and stew-like… it’s perfect. Especially when the weather is as eerily cold as it’s been. Nothing like soup…er, chowder… to warm you up!
“Clams ain’t meat”… my kinda guy :)
I love chowder but haven’t tried clam chowder before. But it looks and sounds so tasty and comforting!
Oh YEAH Now we are talking. I love a good clam chowder and this one will hit a good spot in me. Esp the THICK and creamy sort. Esp with potato. i’m so drooling!
